Imani Bazemore, MD
University of North Carolina Hometown: Oak Ridge, NC
Undergrad: University of North Carolina Hobbies: I have an axolotl named Noodle and recently rescued an English bulldog named Judd! I love cozy hobbies and my favorites are knitting, crocheting, reading, and building legos. Why CMC: I was really blown away by the environment and interactions that I had during interviews and second look! It was important for me to have a program that was supportive with fun people and I found that in CMC ◡̈ Daniel Evans, MD
Washington State University Hometown: Maple Valley, WA
Undergrad: Arizona State University Hobbies: Mountain biking, rock climbing, camping, fishing, working out, cooking, painting, and travel Why CMC: I ranked CMC #1 because it's been a powerhouse name in emergency medicine for nearly 50 years and has one of the busiest adult and pediatric level 1 trauma centers in the country all in one location -- what's not to love?! In all seriousness though, I had the privilege of rotating here last Fall and just felt at home with the attendings, residents, and nurses. Everyone was so welcoming, collegial, and supportive of one another -- even those from outside specialties. It's one big family here and one that I'm proud to be a part of. Gabrielle Harousseau, MD
New York Medical College Hometown: Scarsdale, NY
Undergrad: University of North Carolina Hobbies: Skiing, trail running with my dog, and just about anything else to get outside. Avid to bandwagon supporter of New York Rangers hockey, Carolina basketball, and French international soccer. Why CMC: It was time to head south again! Aside from checking all the boxes for what I wanted in a program, my second look let me know how supported I would feel working at CMC. I met future colleagues that were clearly working hard, enjoyed being around one another, and took time to foster a supportive environment. I am thrilled to be closer to family and pursuing outstanding emergency medicine training here in Charlotte. Nicole Nesnidal, MD
Chicago Medical School Hometown: River Forest, IL
Undergrad: University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign Hobbies: Volleyball, dogs, and hiking Why CMC: Reputation, Population, Location…. But really the people! Virtual interviews can be challenging but CMC stood out to me from the social during which the significant others of residents attended, even when their resident SO was on shift and couldn’t come. That demonstrated a level of closeness that simply can’t be faked! Oh.. and the banter between PD and APD during the interview day was golden. Omkar Tamhankar, MD
Indiana University Hometown: Carmel, Indiana
Undergrad: Indiana University Hobbies: Rock climbing, hiking, snowboarding - but I’m rocking a broken foot right now so hobbies have switched to binging fantasy books Why CMC: When I was searching around for away rotations all my EM mentors told me I had to apply to CMC! The residents and faculty were amazing teachers. They strike a balance of making sure you learn a ton without overly stressing you out. I knew I had to come back to train here. Doesn’t hurt that Charlotte is an insanely fun city |
Diane Chau, MD
UT Southwestern Hometown: Houston, TX
College: University of Texas at Austin Hobbies: Spending my paycheck on houseplants at Oakdales and PIke’s Nursery, taking my cat out on walks (I know right?!), trying new food places in Charlotte with my husband, and working on my knitting/crochet projects Why CMC: The interview!! I remember logging off and saying to myself, “Wow…I want to go there!”. I wanted to train at a rigorous and strong residency program, but most importantly, I wanted to be surrounded by people who I wanted to be. I met the most humble, kind, warm, and welcoming residents and attendings at the CMC interview who stressed the humanities of emergency medicine above all. Being here for now for several months, I can now say that I am reminded how lucky I am to work with my fellow residents, the nurses, technicians, and attendings every shift. Michelle Goforth, MD
University of Arizona Hometown: Pinetop, AZ
Undergrad: Arizona State University Hobbies: spending time with my husband, family, and friends, cooking, reading, travel, board/card games Why CMC: I fell in love with this program during my away rotation! I immediately felt so welcomed and like I had found my home away from home. The faculty, residents, nurses, and techs were all so supportive and friendly while still encouraging us to step outside of our comfort zones. I can’t wait to become a part of the incredible culture here over the next 3 years with all of my amazing co-residents! Alayna Lawrence, MD
Emory University Hometown: Madison, WI
Undergrad: University of Minnesota Hobbies: Fostering newborn puppies, gardening, spending time with my backyard ducks, runs with my dogs, sailing, traveling to new countries, hot sauces & spicy food Why CMC: When I rotated at CMC as a medical student, I immediately felt like part of an incredible family. The Emergency Medicine residents had a strong, collaborative relationship not only with the faculty, but also with residents from other specialties and the ED’s nurses and techs. That sense of community and teamwork was inspiring. I’m also deeply interested in pursuing a fellowship in Disaster Medicine, and seeing CMC’s coordinated response with Med-1 to the Asheville area after the 2024 hurricane damage further solidified my desire to train at a program that serves its community in times of need. Thomas Nguyen, MD
UT San Antonio Hometown: Houston, Texas
Undergrad: University of Texas at Austin Hobbies: Cooking, board games, home bartending, camping, video games, and D&D Why CMC: I love CMC and the city of Charlotte! I applied because of the program's strong reputation for graduating excellent EM physicians in three years; I came out of my interview convinced that I would work hard but be rewarded with amazing training, especially in pediatric EM which really mattered to me. I later had the chance to meet residents, alumni, and significant others of the program who were all super welcoming and just a big family. Finally, when my partner and I visited Charlotte, we loved it! It's got great food and breweries, it's close to whitewater rafting and scenic mountain ranges, and it's full of energy from young professionals and an increasingly diverse population. Fourth-years: I know your time and effort is limited when it comes to applications and interview season, but if you're interested I think checking out this program is worth your while! Matthew Vinson, MD
Virginia Tech Hometown: Mix of Franklin, NC and Roanoke, VA
Undergrad: Wake Forest University Hobbies: Camping, hiking, kayaking, baseball (Go Braves!), weightlifting, travel, reading, binge-watching TV shows, music festivals, and anything with my wife Meredith and two kids Rett and Austin. Why CMC: I was captivated by the outstanding training led by true experts in EM, the supportive team culture, and the commitment to serving the diverse Charlotte community. I knew as soon as I finished the interview that if I ever wanted a chance to reach my full potential as an ED doctor, this was the best program for me! I’m truly blessed to serve alongside such a phenomenal group! |

Oh, and world-class training!! Kristina Gueco, MD
Virginia Tech Hometown: San Diego, CA

University of South Carolina Hometown: Columbus, Ohio Undergrad: Clemson University Hobbies: Travel, cooking Italian food, boating, spin class Why CMC: I chose CMC for the excellent training environment, the outstanding faculty and the amazing residents! I did my away rotation here and immediately knew this is where I wanted to train for the next 3 years, the unique supportive and encouraging atmosphere while challenging me daily is exactly what I was looking for! Kelly Olsen, MD
University of North Carolina Hometown: Saratoga Springs, NY
Undergrad: Villanova University Hobbies: Rock climbing, woodturning, gardening, having tons of pets and fig trees, dabbling in ten thousand different hobbies Why CMC: I chose CMC because of the really outstanding educational environment I witnessed on my away rotation here- everyone is so excited to talk things through, willing to adapt their practice, and eager to teach and to learn. My least favorite thing to hear as a learner is “that’s just how it’s done” and I never heard that from people at CMC- everyone was always excited to dig deeper. That plus the truly awesome people at every level of the program made it an obvious choice! |
