Hobbies: CrossFit, thrift shopping, trying new restaurants, traveling, and spending time with my wife, family, and friends Why you choose CMC: Short answer - vibes. Long answer - Coming from the northwest, I admittedly hadn’t originally researched many programs almost 3000 miles away. Then I met a fellow who was CMC EM alumni while in medical school who told me about the strong clinical training, incredibly supportive community, and outstanding faculty mentorship that CMC has to offer. On my interview day I remember Dr. Fox telling us the training here will push us to become the emergency physicians, teachers, scientists, leaders, and protectors that we can be, and that resonated with me. When my wife and I came down for the second look we fell in love with the city of Charlotte and are so grateful to call this place home for at least the next three years. |

OLIVER HOBSON
Indiana University SOM Hometown: Indianapolis, IN
Hobbies: Mountain biking, brewing coffee, downhill skiing, ice / alpine climbing Favorite Place in CLT: Whitewater Center and HEX Coffee Shop Why CMC: In my estimation, CMC is one of the best institutions for EM residency training in the country. As a medical student , I was consistently impressed with the quality of the residents, attendings, and staff at CMC during my away rotation. The volume, acuity, and diversity of patients (including pediatric patients) is incredible for a single institution center. And most importantly, the culture of high expectations and high support gives residents the latitude to learn by doing during these developmental years as a resident physician. So excited to train here for the next three years! |
University of Tennessee
Hometown: Danbury, CT
Hobbies: Beach volleyball, triathlons, snowboarding, hiking with my dog and fiancé :) Why CMC: I chose CMC because of its reputation and the kind of emergency physician I knew it would shape me into. CMC is a producer of clinically excellent and procedurally sound ER doctors who can work with patients of all ages and backgrounds. Being a large academic center, CMC receives cases from all over the region that many other hospitals may never see. At the same time, being a county hospital in a diverse city, CMC also receives its fair share of blunt and penetrating traumas and community medicine, truly making it a jack-of-all trades program. Fav places in Charlotte: So far our favorite place in Charlotte is the White Water Rafting Center. My fiancé and I love taking our dog there for off-leash hikes, catching live music and concerts, and using the climbing and bouldering walls. We’re also really excited to go white water rafting there for our anniversary this year! |
NATE TUNELL
Medical College of Wisconsin Hometown: Superior, WI
Hobbies: I enjoy exploring coffee shops with my wife to find the best coffee and vibes in town. I also enjoy the occasional chess game or hike. I am looking forward to seeing what the Blue Ridge Mountains have to offer! Why CMC: I chose CMC because I believe the training here is world-class and has mentors in every area of training you would want. I think the volume, acuity, and resources available here in combination with what feels like a hybrid of a county and academic setting makes for a perfect place to learn. In addition, the people here are absolutely top notch. All the residents and their partners feel like a family here, and the faculty are approachable and eager to teach. |
