Welcome to the Emergency Department!
Our ED would not run without the help of our numerous off service rotators from other specialties. We appreciate the chance to learn from many of you during our off service rotations in the hospital, and hope that you will take advantage of this experience to gain new skills and perspectives.
The ED is a busy place and it can certainly be overwhelming at times. We have created a document to help you get acquainted with shift structure, on-shift expectations and general workflow. This website also has our Top 20 page, which houses on-shift reference materials and all of our most recent protocols and guidelines. Please utilize it on shift to help streamline your patient care.

More information...
Schedules: Look out for an email from our scheduling chief a few months prior to your assigned month in the ED. You can submit schedule requests on our online scheduling software Shift Admin. You will get 2 personal days that you can request off. You can also request off for assigned clinic days and academic days as necessitated by your program/specialty. Shift load per month is dependent on how many individuals rotating in the department at that time, but will be laid out in the chief email. There will be more specifics about login information and exactly how to request off provided by the chiefs.
Call Outs: Notify the chiefs ASAP if you have an emergency and cannot make it to shift. Their contact information will be provided in the initial email. Of note, we have a callout payback system among EM residents and we request that our off service rotators uphold this as well. If you have to call out, the expectation is that you make up that shift during your month(s) rotating with us. If you have numerous call outs and cannot make them all up within that month, shifts will be added to the following month's resident from your specialty to even out the shifts for the resident who was called in
Epic Tips: The video in this link reviews how to set up your Epic Workflow to optimize your efficiency in the ED.
Help: PGY-2 and PGY-3 EM residents are always there on shift to help you. Please don't hesitate to ask for help on a difficult patient, not knowing how to order something or where to find equipment, a procedure you've never done before, or if a patient is sick and you're worried about them, etc. We love getting to work with all of you and are excited to see you in the ED this month!
