A Leader in EM since 1976
Founded in 1940 originally as Charlotte Memorial Hospital, Carolinas Medical Center Main is a 874 bed, community based, tertiary teaching hospital located just South of uptown Charlotte, NC. The residency training program opened its doors in 1976 and has graduated over 400 EM physicians, many of whom have serves as leaders in emergency medicine around the US. The medical campus exists with adult and pediatrics hospitals existing on a unified footprint, allowing residents to train throughout the entire spectrum of EM care at one location.
We are a fully accredited Level 1 Trauma Center and the only level 1 trauma center in the region. We exist as the Charlotte campus for Wake Forest University School of Medicine, with the full medical school campus being completed later this year. CMC Main maintains top tier certification across multiple organizations and pathologies, such as Chest Pain Center accreditation and Primary Stroke Certification.
Levine Children's Hospital is the second largest children's hospital in the Southeastern United States with 234 beds and is the region's only Pediatric Level I Trauma Center. It was completed in 2007 and is connected to the Carolinas Medical Center Main Hospital. The 20 bed pediatric emergency department is connected to the adult emergency department, allowing for an increased collaboration during times of need.
There are around 40 full emergency medicine trained academic faculty members in the Department of Emergency Medicine. The Emergency Department manages approximately 120,000 patients each year, through the adult and pediatric EDs. The adult emergency department is divided up into Major Treatment, Diagnostic Center, and Ambulatory Emergency Center. Two to four board certified emergency medicine faculty members are present in the adult departments at all times.
Carolinas Medical Center served as the flagship institution for one of the nation's largest healthcare networks, Atrium Health. In recent years, Atrium and Advocate Health Systems have joined forces, allowing for increased educational collaboration across a broader region. The system encompasses more than1000 care facilities and employs over 21,000 physicians, across multiple regions and states. The Advocate Health network employs over 60,000 employees, with the flagship location right here at CMC Main undergoing an incredible upgrade with a brand new, state-of-the-art medical tower approaching completion.
Residencies represented at CMC Main include: Emergency Medicine, Orthopedic Surgery, General Surgery, Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, OB-GYN, Vascular Surgery, Gastroenterology, Urology, Pharmacy, Oral Medicine, Psychiatry, Hepatopancreatobiliary, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and multiple other fellowships within these programs.
