MEDICAL TOXICOLOGY FELLOWSHIP
Overview (updated 9/17/2020)
The Carolinas Medical Center Department of Emergency Medicine’s Division of Medical Toxicology offers a two-year ACGME-certified Medical Toxicology Fellowship training program. Graduates of ACGME, RCPSC, or CFPC-accredited emergency medicine, pediatrics, preventive medicine, internal medicine or family medicine training programs are eligible. The training experience encompasses all facets of medical toxicology and academics including:
The development of the fellowship occurs in two phases. In the first year, emphasis is placed on clinical experience through bedside patient consultation, occupational clinic, and poison center case encounters. In the second year, academics endeavors (didactic, presentation, and writing skills) are refined. The fellow also executes a research project during the second year that is tailored to his/her professional interest.

North Carolina Poison Control
Our fellows also participate in patient care through the North Carolina Poison Control, a 24-hour resource for the treatment of poisoning exposures that is available to healthcare providers and the lay public. The center is designated as the statewide poison control center by the NC Department of Health and Human Services and is certified by the American Association of Poison Control Centers as a Regional Poison Control Center. Specialists in Poison Information (SPIs) staff the toll-free emergency phone lines. SPIs are specially trained nurses and pharmacists who are knowledgeable about toxic substances. Established in 1992, North Carolina Poison Control handles 85,000 exposure and information calls annually. North Carolina Poison Control provides telemedicine consultation around the state to health care providers; this service is performed by the Medical Toxicology Division.

Compensation
Salary is at the appropriate PGY level for the incoming fellow. All fellows and their dependents are provided medical, prescription drug, and dental coverage. Professional liability, life, and disability insurance, along with three weeks of paid vacation and $1,900 for continuing medical education for the academic year. View additional information regarding compensation and benefits. Office space is provided on the hospital campus and at North Carolina Poison Control.
Charlotte and the Surrounding Area
Charlotte is located in the southern Piedmont region of North Carolina. Two large lakes, Lake Norman and Lake Wylie, are situated at the northwest and southwest corridors of the county. Driving time to the Great Smoky Mountains is approximately three hours, and approximately four hours to North and South Carolina beaches, including the Outer Banks, Myrtle Beach, Charleston, and Hilton Head. The summers are hot and winters mild with occasional snow falls and ice storms. Mecklenburg County is 552 square miles, with the city limits of Charlotte comprising about 285. The population is around 1 million residents, with an additional weekday commuter influx of about 150,000.
Charlotte is a city of both traditional and modern tastes. The city's architecture blends historical homes and new developments. It is home to many corporate headquarters and major industrial employers. The city offers more than 700 different houses of worship in all denominations. This area of North Carolina is famous for its family atmosphere and southern charm. There is a huge variety of clubs, pubs, sports bars, restaurants, gallery crawls and coffee houses. Fine arts include the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, Discovery Place, Mint Museum of Art, Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, North Carolina Dance Theater and Opera Carolina. Sporting events include the Carolina Panthers NFL team, the Charlotte Hornets NBA team, Charlotte Motor Speedway for NASCAR events, The PGA's Wells Fargo Championship Golf Tournament at the Quail Hollow Club, the Charlotte Checkers minor league hockey team, the Charlotte Knights minor league baseball team, and various NCAA sporting events at UNC Charlotte and Davidson College.

- · Outpatient evaluation of occupational and environmental exposures
- · Poison Control Center direction
- · Basic or clinical research (inception, design, IRB/IACUC review, grant writing, analysis, and reporting)
- · Didactics (journal club, case conference, chapter reviews, and in-depth pharmacology conference)
- · Preparation of lectures for departments within Carolinas Medical Center, regional CME conferences, and national venues
- · Writing (case reports, text chapters, abstracts, and original research)
- · Instruction to resident, medical student, and PharmD student rotators
- · Presentation of research at national meetings
