COVID-19 Update: We hope to accept visiting students, in accordance with updated ACGME guidelines in the 2022 academic year. If visiting clerkships are permitted by ACGME students will be able to apply through VSLO as early as April 2022.

- Rotation shift schedule: 8 hour shifts. 15 total shifts; includes shifts in Adult and Children's ED.
- Patient volume: 120,000+
- Housing available/cost: Dedicated housing for in-state students
- Out-of-state: a variety of housing options are available at a reasonable cost including staying with residents.
- Student conferences: Yes, during peak months dedicated lectures for medical students only on Wednesdays from 8-10 AM. In addition, medical students attend the resident block conference on Thursday from 8 AM to noon.
- Reading material: Provided; includes readings and Emergency Medicine podcasts.
- Prerequisites: Students must have completed all core clinical clerkships at their home institution.
- Malpractice provided: No, malpractice coverage from your home institution is required to rotate.
- Other unique opportunities:
- During some months, senior residents participate in our medical teaching elective during which they work one-on-one with students in the ED (with no other clinical responsibilities during these dedicated shifts).
- Students will have the opportunity to learn about social services available in Mecklenburg county through a required "community day."
- All students completing an AI will also be required to complete a brief self-directed learning project involving a clinical question and patient follow-up.
